HTC are well known for cr*ppy battery life as they fit small batteries into their phones. An update could cure this like SE X10 battery life was doubled with the latest update. Overheating and it not wanting to play video Maybe down to a faulty phone, try updating otherwise take it back abd demand a replacement. * +

Overheating and HTC in my experience go together, my Diamond cooks your face if on phone for short while, and if your charging it, well it warms the house * +
