Rumors of a deal where Sony Ericsson takes over High Tech Computer (better known as HTC) are bubbling around at the moment, and dont seem that ridiculous once considered.HTC has cancelled a number of meetings without notice or explanation, which may not seem like much, but the company has only been operating for around 18 months so would be primed for a merger or takeover.Adding fuel to the fire is the fact SE has selected HTC for its Xperia X1 model, a Windows-running device. * +

The mobile manufacturer has previously stuck with Symbian, so the move is significant.HTC has dismissed the rumours as being without substance, but earlier in the year CEO Peter Chou was warm to the idea of a company of SEs ilk becoming partners with the Taiwanese firm.HTC is also featuring prominently in the mobile phone world for its possible release of the 'Dream', rumoured to be the first phone to run Googles Android platform. * +

HTC have been around alot longer than 18 months. thay have only been trading under their name with their own brand for 18 months but as a company manufaturing pocket pc's and smartphones for other compasnies it goes back years. if SE do take over HTC i will move to another pda manufacturer because i left the world of SE smartphones due to their lack of imagination when it came to design and specs * +

It could be true, I must say that I haven't read anything, only what you 2 posted here, but earlier this year, SE sold to Motorola its part of Symbian UIQ, so this could be a clue to what they were thinking at that point. And I was thinking if maybe Motorola steps out of this bussiness, I'll try a HTC device, now to hear that SE buys them... oh noo!! lol * +

NO! After how SE have COMPLETELY ruined Symbian UIQ they must not even dare buy HTC. I doubt HTC would let this happen though. Last i checkd SE are on a bit of a downward spiral while HTC are growing very well. Anyway who knows. Even the SE X1 has apparently a lot of probs whilest the HTC TOUCH Pro is much more stable and is even getting releasd earlier. * +

I totally agree with you. On the other hand no one at HTC want to go with SE because of SE's bad reputation. I am a htc user and fan for quite some time (and s60) and I follow them step by step. When htc agreed to build/sell to SE - almost caused a company split. Keep in mind Htc is Taiwanese while SE has Japanese 'roots'. Arch rivals ! ! ! they will better die then be 'bought' by SE. * +

Unwired view-Rumor has it that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 will be released in September of this year. And perhaps, although I say that it might never happen, SE would go ahead and acquire HTC even before their collaboration hits store shelves. Whatever happens, a merger would surely be a benefit. The question, of course, is what direction the benefit will take. For now, its still a rumor, so what can we do? * +
