its really down to personal preference, i used cubase years ago, but moved over to ableton and found that suits me better. even fl studio has its merits and you can get some professional results out of it(Deadmau5 for example). Vsts only work with windows (as far as i know) macs have a similar format (Au) that quite often comes with the vst installer. you coukd possible get them working using a * +

virtual windows machine inside linux, then link midi between the 2OS's but that could be hard work! lol. dont know why there arent linux versions of some of the big synths, especially as mac osx us a r*tard cousin of linux! * +
