Most of the decent programs you'll have to pay for, unless you want something with next to no functionality. You can get cut down versions if the main DAWs (digital audio workstations). I'd recommend starting with ableton live lite edition. I use the full version myself and it's got a lot of flexabikity for recording live tracks or for producing * +

about 10 years ago computer music magazine gave away a free DAW software. You might want to try search on google for that. *
