In quality. 128kbit mp3s are 1/10th the quality of the original. I actually tend to use the FLAC format, which makes the file smaller but is a lossless format and sounds a lot better. * +

Wma are slightly better than mp3, but at the bitrate it's still not great! * +

lossless flac at 24 bit,192khz is the way to go. Anybody know of a portable player that can play that format?

Well there's a FLAC player available for iPhone/iPod touch, and I assume other platforms will have their own apps. With storage getting cheaper and Internet speeds getting faster I can see formats like FLAC getting more popular * +
