If you describe yourself as an artist, people think you're a painter, so the posh (French) version is used to signify anyone working in the entertainment industry. Agree with anduan - long ago, Grammys were awarded for musical excellence/creativity, now (as with all such awards) they're given for mass-market acceptance, which is a very different thing. * +
