At the Centre of the stone circle built hundreds of years before the dawn of history by druids on the west side of the island of lewis lies a cruciform limestone escutcheon. The druids were a mysterious people. as no-one knows who they were, or what they were doing. Local Celtic legend has it that if someone lies on the escutcheon with their head to the north, at midnight during a full moon, with a mouthful of barley and an acorn in each ear, making high pitched squeaking noises through their nose, that the goddess of fertility will descend on their underpants. *
