The back of the iPad can get scratched easily even with careful usage. My suggestion is to put it in a thin case that wouldn't add any bulk but would protect it from scratches as well. * +

Or instead of a case get what's called a skin made of leather, it sticks on to the back and there are all sorts of designs * +
