1 u can't turn ya iOS off and need pc to boot and other you don't just jailbrake and done * +

With a tethered jailbreak you can't have your device turned off without it being connected to iTunes.. Untethered means that you can use your device freely. For example you can turn it on and off whenever you want.. Someone else will be able to explain this in better terminology x * +
