They are like the providers of certain apps on cydia/installer! A repo is a bunch of apps and where they are kept so you can download it. * +

of course you can use both type of apps, i'm using them right now, but let me tell you, since app store came up, cydia doesnt nave anything that great anymore, just some themes and apps that are more system driven. * +
