might be a stupid question but what is the point of running a game at 60 frames a second when the human eye only picks up 24 frames a second. * +

The human eye can easily see more than 24 frames a second, most people can usually tell the difference between 30 and 60 frames fairly quickly especially if they are side by side. Games actually work best with a high framerate because they lack the high quality type motion blur you get for free in film. Besides this its not just about how you actually see the framerate, its about how quickly * +

control inputs respond to your inputs. A game running at a high speed responds far faster, and feels much much slicker. It is something you have to really experience before commenting properly, and for games, that means ownign a quality gaming PC. I can even tell the difference between 60 and 120 frames a second, and on some flight games, 120 frames a second is eerily smooth and looks quite amazin * +

as far as this text book tells me 24 frames is what the human eye sees. * +

Well if the textbook says the most a human eye can see is 24 frames a second then that textbook is horribly wrong and be burnt as soon as possible
it is the speed films run at, but thats it. Its pretty easy to see the difference between 24 and 60 frames in games * +

I cant use a PC if the refresh rate is anything below 80htz. The flicker is much too noticable. 70 at a push * +

refresh rate isn't the same thing as frame rate, but they are connected in that your framerate can't exceed the refresh rate * +

And now using a HDTV I can notice the flicker of SD, making it unwatchable. Try something like Burnout 2 on 60htz for an hour on and SDTV, then switch to NFS Most Wanted. I did that once years back on PS2. The change if framerate hurt my eyes, it was even noticably 'slower'. Up til then I was loving MW... * +
