It's widely accepted MS knew they'd make a loss on the original Xbox, they pumped tons of money into it so the could get a foothold. They made huge losses. * +

Thing is Sony and nintendo are well setup and structured for the industry now. Even after all this time its incredible how few studios microsoft own or opened. Their philosophy of buying third parties off but not collecting studios means their costs will always be far higher than if they just owned it outright or made lots of their own. * +

Sony overall have lost money, but as far as I know the Entertainment division taken on it's own has been making profits. Profit and loss is complicated though, Acti have published the biggest game in history but still posted a loss of 242 million dollars. Most big corporations go through phases of making huge profits one year then losses the next. * +

Sony have lost billions this generation but overall in terms of their time in the indsutry it has been fairly profitable for them. In other words sony are better off for being in the industry and owning billions worth of IPs and studios etc too, whereas microsoft don't even have much of that.... * +

not sayin microsoft did it but some companys set up/buy other companys for tax loses anway...more lose, less tax has to be paid, individuals arnt liable but still draw a wage...unless businesses/laws have changed alot in 5 years...
