Not a steam user but what is steam keys? Are those like those keys where when installing a program, you need a key to proceed? I got access to alot of keys but never knew what are they. * +

Who said you already have the game? 1 key = 1 copy (license) of a game. Each key is one license. You buy a key to buy and 'own' the game and install it on steam. Most want it on steam because they trust steam, and have lots of their titles there already so want to keep them in one place.

These days few major PC games run as standalones, they usually REQUIRE a client platform like steam to run. Essentially this is a DRM measure cloaked as a distribution medium.

Steam is simply the most popular of all the PC gaming clients. * +

Ah thanks for the explanation spartan. I can get keys for you i still remember when stean was first launched. I was trying to install a version of counter strike and it force me to install this thing called Steam and was wondering wtf is it, thought it was a spam ware by game distributors. Steam has since grew and i knew what is it but not 'keys'. * +
