The worst genre of movies.
Why is it that the female character is always so unlikeable, a trend started with My Best Friends Wedding. The latest one's, 27 Dresses, The Proposal, The Ugly Truth are no better. The female characters are terrible and the male characters are no better. The female character is this big b***h till she meets a man, when she turns into a blithering idiot. It really ticks me off. * +

Ah, romance. It stems from the basic story technique of chick-lit novels. The author always has her character as a 'Mary Sue'. It's the author living through the character. To make it known that the woman is independant they're cynical and frosty. It's just chick-lit writers seldom have the talent to convey independance any other way. They always have some dream job like working in the fashion industry to prove they don't need men. * +

Then in comes the strong, sensitive, witty, rich, charming, endowed, manicured, empathetic, romantically emphatic type. A traditional renaissance man that remains contemporary yet supports family values. An amalgam of what women want. So he gently erodes her independance by a series of superficial gestures. She then melts into his arms. Funny how that genre of films and books are popular with women, yet the message is 'You need a man to direct you.'
