im on my 8250 and i cant seem to use facebook places. in options its greyed out aswell. can anyone tell me how to get this workin. thanks. * +

you cant, you need 3g for it, which the 8520 doesnt support. * +

i re read, u said 8250, which does have 3g 
if you have a 3g signal and still nothing, personally, id delete the app, reboot and reinstall. * +

i think you require a Gps module to share location or place models like 9300 upwards should be able to use it with pleasure * +

only devices with GPS work with Location. * +

google maps work with your bis data it do not depend on a Gps module any brick can use google maps * +
