Turbozx got a good point! If d guy who serviced ur car put in cheap oil, ur vw wil do that. Vws nd mazdas r very sensitive on ther oil, il recomend u to use shell helix super or plus nd if its got over 200000ks, use helix high milage. * +

The engine makes that sound when its cold and dissapears as it warms up ...Not vice versa. And im hoping the mech usd d correct grade oil as it was servicd thru an accreditd vw dealeship. But il check that, thnx. Its got jst under 50'000km on the clock..too early 4 mechanical wear n tear? * +

If its an 8 valve engine it will b hydraulic lifters that r to blame. I got a mk2 gti that does the same. * +

I dnt know wats ur 8v theory bt any cars lifters cud get noisy.. Even a 24v! Bout pinging, its caused by bad combustion.. The unburnt airfuel mixture causes an afterburn nd that makes the noise. Its usualy caused by incorrect ignition timing or a motor busy overheating. *
