dont touch ur brakes if u have no idea what ur doing they r the most important part of ur cars safety take it to a shop and if u have to topp it up uve obviously got a leak in the system. best u leave it 2 the profesionals. how much is ur life and the lives of others worth? id say it will b more than the brake repair * +

If you dont know what you are doing but still want to do it yourself then get a manual or copy that section from the manual in a library. Here is my understandsing of your problem. If you are topping it up regularly then you have a leak somewhere. Check your entire system, all calipers, drums, master cylinder, and pipes for any leaks. Look for wet patches on the under your car. i have discs infront and drums at the back. I haven had to top it for a while now. But sometimes the pedal will go soft just once then i push it a few times and it hardens. . And Now my back right drum is smoking! !Think they binding? ? Or my handbrake stuck? Wat can i do? * +

Thats the slave cylinder that leaking. Just remove the wheel nd drum a55 y and replace the cylinder. Have to bleed it well through. Wat sowiked said is also important, system must get drained atleast evry 2yr. Brakefluid gets contaminated after some while. * +

Brake fluid is hydroscopic - it absorbs moisture. Not good. So it needs to be replaced if its gone spongey,as heating of the brakes has caused water in it to steam and turn to bubbles. Air squashes,which is why your pedal goes squashy. There's air trapped in there,it all needs flushing out. Tricky job,potentially disastrous if you dont know how,you'll have no brakes at all. * +
