I saw an article on lithium batteries by a clueless food delivery courier, so i wanted to post this here.
You must use the correct charger for the battery, both actual charge voltage and battery type. Rated voltage and charge voltage are not the same. Charge voltage is very specific and it's best to go at least half a volt under, but ideally use a bigger battery and go a few volts under for the same capacity - this ensures that a couple of dead cells won't cause the rest to take on more charge.
You must not use a charger that exceeds the battery's maximum charge, so you cannot use a 12v car charger on a 12v lithium battery because the lead acid battery charges higher. The battery's BMS will try to defend the battery, but it will eventually overheat.
Ensure you use proper plugs. Do not use crocodile clips, audio plugs, or other such connections on a Lithium battery. These affect communication between the charger and the BMS, and a poor connection can cause the charger to receive a low voltage signal, causing overcharging.
The battery must have a fitted charge lead with a proper plug, like a kettle lead, XT90 or Anderson (i use Anderson on all my stuff, though the one on the 72v bike is bigger so i can't put the wrong charger on it).
There are a lot of fires involving ebikes and scooters, due to the above details being ignored, or not widely known.
I have several ebikes, all home built. I've had to fit uprated BMS cards, take the +/- cable to multiple first/last gang cells, remove audio charge plugs and purchase better chargers due to the Chinese manufacturer's under-engineering (the parts are out there but i guess they don't make for competitively priced package deals). I also limit speed and power on the computer. The result being reliable well-engineered bikes that always charge, so i can just enjoy them. *
