Just bought a 2005 almera, which is running GR8,with just some small issues. Batt light stays on constantly,bt I've checked both alternator and batt and both are fine! Also sometimes car just dies and ECU light comes on,bt after restart light goes oFf and everything fine again! * +

so someone suggested I reset ECU? and that I can do so by just disconnecting a batt terminal for a few minutes? is it really as easy as that? and will I have any probs after resetting ECU? * +

resetting the ecu is no problem, after reconnecting the battery, the car will run rough for a while as the ecu relearns it's settings. Whether a reset will clear the light, no idea, sorry. But it can't do any harm, so give it a go. Remember to make sure you know your radio code before you disconnect tho * +

thanx campa, will give it a go,bt before I do,what do you mean by rough? and how long is a while? is it then feasable to reset ECU or should I rather leave well enough alone??? What I have found out in the interim is that the batt fitted in the car is not the standard stock batt, but a re-fit of a batt with a lower CCA than the original? Could this be causing all the issues, because the lower spec batt can't handle all the electronics, etc? * +

disonnecting battery will not reset the ecu!!!! take it to a garage for the fault rather than guessing. * +

garages cost money andkent, which is why we try and resolve ourselves? and I've heard too many stories of garages guessing possible this possible that? possible timing belt, possible coils, then replacing everything and still mot resolving the problem....? In your knowlededgeable opinion HOW does one then reset the ECU? * +

ok, done a bit of googling for you, and according to the almera owners club, the routine for resetting the ecu is: disconnect battery for between 5 mins, and 'overnight' (yeah, sorry). Reconnect battery, and take it for a run for 20-30 mins, driving normally. The ecu will relearn your driving style and adapt the engine management to suit. When i changed my battery, it didn't idle properly to begin with, and had fiat spots through the rev range. But as i drove, it cleared. * +
