Yes and no, depends on the car and system. Some will need to be primed and even possibly bled, some will turn over dry a few times and catch and sort themselves out. Pumps are lubricated with their fuel so it isn;t fantastic turning it over dry on the start either without at least attempting to prime the lines * +

Yeah might help most vehiucles have a manual priming bulb/pump that needs to be squeezed or pressed repeatedly to draw diesel into the pump. Locate that pump on the fuel lines, and fill your fuel filter with diesel if possible. * +
