can this be rooted after the update with z4root or universal androot? I've no access to a laptop so wana root via phone? if you can't root without use of a laptop is it worth updating to lose the root ability? * +

You cant root without the pc, its worth losing the root if you dont use any apps that require root access. * +

I use titanium backup n autokiller memory optimizer as u find titanium useful for deleting stock cr*p n autokiller for battery life * +

There is a guide on XDA to add multi touch to older ROMs, try checking that, i totaly forgot the name nw. I rootd and loaded a custom 2.2 Froyo ROM on mine, didnt nd the SE stuff. * +

Nope, if you're already rooted just get BusyBox from the Market, install it, then get xRecovery from XDA, install that, download a ROM and flash it using xRecovery, no PC needed 
just make sure whatever ROM you get matches or has a patch for your baseband. *
