LG have made a statement which you can see in this video regarding making a metal chassis phone capable of still having a removable battery.

I think it's a pretty cool concept, that is right up until you drop said handset onto a hard surface.

yeah but it's another gimmick that makes it unique. there was never anyone crying out saying I need a phone with two curved edges on it, but they've out sold the standard versions of those handsets.
if they market it well enough that could make it a fair success even with people who've never wondered about taking the battery out.

I'm pretty sure the HTC Desire HD had a similar build. You could take out the battery from a battery door that latched to the phone housing. The Sony Ericsson K850 also had a similar designn. LG's concept sounds it over complicates a solution thats been around for a long time. * +
