if you're on official kitkat on a Samsung s4, 5, or note3 do some serious reading before rooting/or flashing roms kernels and modems..

if you're still on 4.3 don't update your bootloader to the newer one and all your options will remain open to you..
you'll be able to use kitkat roms with the older bootloader and old modems.. (good) * +

Nah im good lol. Dont intend on rooting my note 3 on 4.4.2
Sounds all good but I like the action menu and apparently installing custom roms (cyanogenmod) renders the s pen features useless.. so im good for now * +

there are modified stock roms that will have all the features..
I'm currently running phoenix v8 which has note3 and s5 apps included in it on my s4... but point taken ! * +

I'm toying with the idea of rooting my s5 just to get rid of all the bloatware and cr*p that keeps restarting itself when I've no need for it * +

you will not be able to reset your binary counter as it's now a knox counter... your warranty will be void for good... * +

Have an S4, on 4.4.2 Kitkat, I'm rooted, using Wanam Xposed and Xposed Framework to do tweaks on my phon. I tripped my Knox counter in January, luckily here in South Africa, Samsung's come with Accidental Damage Handling, so even though my Knox warranty is 0x1, my ADH coverage still allowed me two free fixes if I drop my phone in water or broke the screen. When mine gave me the SView cover bug with black screen flashing randomly, I took it in to Samsung, they replaced the display panel plus magnet sensor, and did a format, within 2-3hours my phone was ready, I was never hassled about my Knox being tripped. I've got 1 more free ADH fix left now be it water damage or display. So South Africans, and most others here in Africa who's countries have ADH, you need not worry about this. * +
