if you the whole thing to be simple and fool proof, just forget about everything and flash a custom kernal which already have latest CWM recovery 5.x touch, like SpeedMod,SiyahKernel v4.1.5 or N.E.A.K. ICS - v2.1.2x. once you install cwm you will be able to make nandroid backups, so you dont have to worry about making mistakes :) you can just go back to previous backup when ever you want. and all these kernals are 3-8Mb in size and has s**tload of mods for smooth n better performance and breat b

Siyah kernel is f up, if you flash it you gotta get rid the triangle, plus if you factory reset your ROM is f. You gotta flash all over. Hope you guys always have original backup ROM before start messing around. * +
