With the Galaxy siii being released into the wild, youtube stepped up their game and Optimised its application to take advantage of the 720p screen the gsiii offers, yet those of us not fortunate enough to have such an high resolution display only get to see hq content at best. Would you like to stream 720p content on YouTube? If your phone is capable of hd playback read below. * +

You must have root access on your phone for this to work. Open up the location of system/app/youtube.apk and rename it to youtube.apk.old, if youre unable to do this, ie - error, you need to set permissions as to allow access to the system folder. Download root explorer, navigate to the same location of youtube.apk.. * +

At the top of root explorer, click on 'mount r/w' so it changes to 'mount r/o', if a box pops up, grant the permissions. Now try renaming youtube.apk to youtube.apk.old.. Providing you've clicked on 'mount r/w' it should rename without any problems. Now.. You will need the modified version of Youtube.. * +

Find the version of android you're running below and download the relevant apk file. Android 2.x-3.1 (Froyo/GB/HC).. Wifi/3g - http://is.gd/ZKV42D .. If the installation denies you access, and it says something around the lines - already exists / certificate error, you have failed to rename youtube.apk to youtube.apk.old.. Bear in mind you can go ahead and erase the youtube.apk.old file once you've successfully installed the modified version. * +

How will i know if it worked? The youtube file you downloaded from the links provided should install without any issues. Open up youtube, its the same icon as before, and try playing a video from the featured list, if your connection is fast enough, rather than displaying 'hq' you should see 'hd' ..... If hd doesnt appear its because an hd stream isn't available for that particular video, so try another video. Most videos will try and default at 'hd'. * +

.. by default. Due to the extra data you'll be streaming, be aware if you're using a 3g connection, the more data you stream, the quicker your monthly quota will be eaten up. Just monitor your usage. Enjoy. * +
