nop, if you are using s2 you can do both. change the icon of app or replace the shortcut with a new app, do what polo said for that or use custom lauchers to change just the icons. * +

Make sure you are in Applications. Take the app you want and put it at the bottom, put it over the icon you want to replace, wait until that icon shoots out and then put the one you want in. *
