At least 25 civil were killed, some decapitated and remaining few kidnapped, in eastern Demoratic republic of Congo, and the attack is being blamed on the islamist Allied Democratic force rebel fighters.

This happened when the national Congolese army was chasing ADF fighters when they found the bodies of civilians, who had been taken by surprise in their fields on New Years Eve. * +

The ADF, which has been active in the region since the 1990s as a Ugandan rebel group, is one of more than 100 rebel groups that plague the eastern provinces of the vast country.

A year ago, the Congolese army launched a large-scale campaign against the ADF.

In response, the group abandoned its bases, split into smaller, more mobile groups and retaliated against civilians.

More than 1,000 civilians have been killed by the ADF in 2019-2020, according to UN figures.

Central African Republic declares emergency amid surge in rebel attacks

The state of emergency has been proclaimed across the national territory for 15 days, starting from midnight (2300 GMT), presidential spokesman Albert Yaloke Mokpeme said over national radio.

Mokpeme told AFP that the state of emergency would allow authorities to make arrests without going through national prosecutors.

The announcement follows a surge in attacks by armed groups seeking to overturn the December 27 presidential election. * +
