My mum had a suitcase go missing a couple of years ago. They'd flown out to Florida from Heathrow to catch a cruiseship and one of their cases didn't arrive there with them(well actually it turned out that it did, but not until after their boat had already sailed).
To cut a really long story just a wee bit shorter, they had to buy some clothes and other stuff to use whilst they were away, which they were eventually able to claim money back for on the insurance. Then months later, after they'd got the insurance money and had long given up any hope of ever seeing the case again, they recieved a telephone call from Heathrow saying the case had been located(contents intact) and it was being sent back to them as well.
Turned out that the case had travelled even further than they had. Apparently they had tried to fly it on ahead to rendezvous with their boat at one of it's ports of call in the carribean somewhere but it never caught up with them, after that it had somehow passed through Santiago in Chile on it's way back to Heathrow, which they never went anywhere near on the cruise(Florida, various spots around the caribbean/gulf of mexico, through the Panama canal and up the west coast of the US). * +
