I seem to remember in the early days of PAYG, people had to pay to receive them. I don't think they could send them either, but I could be wrong. * +

Most people had to pay to receive an answerphone message. I didn't, because I was on one2one.

My evenings and weekends were free, but any other time it cost about a pound before anyone the other end was even able to hear a full sentence. * +

I remember when texts were free,then Vodafone started charging 3p for them but it didn't bother me as I didn't text anyone funny how things don't change isn't it. This was in about 1997. Reminiscence over. * +

philips C12 on bt cellnet with 1 them doctored sims that stayed @about 7.50 credit , shame the signal here back then was fkn crap , so sms was much bett than actually calling and call failure /breakup was regular. * +

It took them years to figure out how to recall a message that you mistakingly sent, think WhatsApp does it but not sure what else. *
