San Jose is pronounced San Ho-zay but Americans speak English, or a slightly bast*rdized version of it at least, so to say that 'J is pronounced H in America' is incorrect. The English language is very fluid and often absorbs words(in this case, a name) from other languages, in the case of names and places the original language's pronunciation is usually appropriated as well, although it may be adapted to fit english speech patterns.

In American English:
-Garage is pronounced 'guh-rahjzz' that jzz sound in French
-Opportunity as 'o-por-too-nuh-tee'
-Mature as 'muh-tir-
-Fertile as 'fir-til'
-Status as 'sta- duhs'. How I pronounce it too. Sometimes as 'stah-tis'
-Data as 'da-duh'. How I pronounce it too.
-Route as 'rowt', the 'ow' sound in 'how'. I say 'rohwt', the 'ow' sound in 'row'. Like 'row your boat'.
-Glacier as 'glay-shee-er' how I pronounce it too. Lol at how Brits say 'Gla-see-uh'
-Apparatus as 'a-pa-ra-dis'. We all say it as 'a-puh-ray-tis'.
-Tour as 'tor' . I say 'too-ohr' like that 'oor' sound in 'Moor'
-Water as 'wo-dir'. They tend to use 'd' a lot in place of 't' in some words. * +

Went to the US Embassy for a visa to visit a couple of friends over there. when asked where I was going, I replied San Jose, the immigration officer quickly corrected saying San Jose is pronounced San Hosay J is pronounced H in the US and that it was the Spanish way of pronouncing J as in Julio(Hulio)
So how long will you be staying in San Jose..?
I said 7 months; from Hanuary to Huly...

How they pronounce places:
-Nevada as 'ne-va-duh'. We say 'ne-vah-duh'
-Los Angeles' as 'los-an-juh-lis'. We say 'los-an-juh-lees'
-Ontario as 'on-ta-ree-oh'. We say 'on-tah-ree-oh'
-Panama as 'pa-nuh-mah'. We say 'pa-nuh-muh'

Other differences:
-The letter 'z' is said as 'zee', we say 'zed'

That's how much we differ from the American English vernacular. * +

'H' is silent in Spanish
-Hola becomes ola 'o-luh'

The Spanish used in the Americas is based on the Castilian dialect 'Castellano', used in Castile- where many of the settlers originated. Continental Spanish, based in Madrid, pronounces words such as 'cinco' -five- as 'theen-co', in Castellano as 'seen-co'
-In Continental, 'ci' or 'ce' used in words is pronounced as 'thee' and 'the' respectively. In Castellano as 'see' and 'se'

Llama in Continental is 'llyuh-muh'. In Castellano 'yuh-muh'
-'Ll' is 'lly' in Continental and 'y' in Castellano.

I love learning Spanish and I plan on visiting Argentina someday soon.
