What came first: viruses or its host organism?
The first cannot exist independently from the latter.
Hence, why I believe the host organism was there first. * +

I'm not sure that the only place a virus can exist is within a host, also they're capable of rapid mutation aka evolution. who can say what they were like millions of years ago. * +

I'd say it was more like spores that formed, and then, millions of years ago, Harry met Sally....unfortunately not so beneficial to both, so, the conflict between host and virus started, mutating millions of times to ensure survival, infecting other species, and the age old war is still raging between the good and the bad...... * +

People forget about evolution and assume things have always existed as they do now. The two and their precursors have probably coexisted and constantly evolved with each other for millions of years but my guess who simple virus like organism evolved to live within a host, but before that it was an organism that was living independently * +
