JOHANNESBURG Minister of State Security David Mahlobo announced that government is considering regulating social media, sending Twitter users into a frenzy.
The hashtag HandsOffSocialMedia started trending on Twitter with people condemning government's possible move.
Mahlobo raised concerns saying social media was being abused and government was contemplating to regulate the various platforms.
The minister said this was primarily due to the spread of fake news and scams.
The announcement was met with disapproval, humour and irritation. * +

Regulating social media seems too much like wanting the ability to stifle opinions. Facebook and Twitter already do a decent job of that as is. * +

I think limiting freedom of speech via social media or any other medium is bad news,I even welcome the right of those I disagree with to have their opinions heard. It's a slippery slope. * +
