My sister is a nurse. She works with premature babies and some babies don't always make it. It's always sad for her and her colleagues but they don't cry infront of the parents. Empathy is one thing but breaking down isn't part of the job. * +

Ive only had one incident where I felt I was too emotional to be around the family. The patient had a horrific death. I cried a lot then and asked for a colleague to step in. I think that's where the professionalism comes in, not in holding the emotions but in being able to recognise that you are no longer capable of a professional role and being able to step away. * +

Most of those tears were about what I had witnessed. It still stays with me today. I didn't want the family to see how the nature of the death affected me. * +

I guess I can understand others point also, not sobbing in every circumstance to maintain some degree of professionalism so the family maintains a sense of your professionalism. But I don't see anything wrong in letting some tears fly in certain overwhelming situations. I think your nurturing and empathetic nature is a plus for this job *
