We all have a soft spot for our favourite weirdo. The question is, did he have a mental illness? What do you think was wrong with him? Maybe he had depression, possibly split personality, schizophrenia, bipolar, or a combination of the lot.
And if you're wondering, I use the past tense 'cos he died fyi.

The Ring had corrupted him to the point where his body physically transformed. It had also created a schizophrenia in him where the personality of the Ring had an abusive relationship with Smeagol within the mind and body of Gollum.
You could also argue that Smeagol prior to finding the Ring had pre existing character faults causing him to be more susceptible to the corruption of the Ring, hence his almost immediate murder of Deagol upon setting his gaze upon it. * +

Interesting
That makes sense
He was human, I think, afterall. Hobbits are probably more stronger mentally than us humans. Even Gandalf could not trust himself with that awful ring. * +

Smeagol was a type of Hobbit, which makes his instant corruption by the Ring unusual. Again, this could point to existing character flaws in him. * +
