my nana had a coal fire, it was recycling at its finest. Everything went on the fire, then for supper she would toast some bread for us over the fire coalman used to come on a thursday she would be out sweeping the bits down the coal chute just after he had been. * +

BTW. I don't pay for my coal because I know where there is a bluff with an exposed coal seam. The weathering fractures the coal and all I have to do is go to the bottom of the bluff and gather up the coal gravel.
I also have an outdoor brazier that can use coal for cooking on it. * +

We ad a parkray in our fireplace Ma spent hours in the early morning shrovling up coal to put in a coal bucket from the coal room then shrovling the coal into the parkray. Then she added the fire lighters to mek it light quicker. Struck a match lit some screwed up newspaper n lite the fire. It Lasted bout a week. Then she would ave to tek the coal out and the warm to hot gleads out so she could clean the fire before she set it all up agan. * +
