This happened to me once when I changed cars and forgot ,I put @a fivers worth of petrol in before I realised ...I phoned a friend right away ,and his advice worked ...
Don't start the engine !
Fill your tank up with the correct fuel ,then go a wee run in it ...

I've done the same, but I'm smart - When I put ten quid of petrol in the ex's diesel Golf, I still had enough room to pour two 5L bottles of mineral engine oil in, so I did that. The oil and petrol mixed together made a suitable diesel substitute and the car ran fine on it.
