you get it at a discount depending on how long you've lived there ...think you can buy it at up to50percent market value.....unless it's changed * +

the former renters can buy them at a fraction of what they would cost if it wasn't social housing, so it's still pretty cheap mortgage wise.

when thatcher was in power she wanted everyone in the country to be home owners so she forbid councils from using the money they got from house sales to build more council homes. * +

I think they either do or used to do something like that here too, cause there are loads of those houses that have been bought and are being rented out through agents now. * +

There really is no such thing as council houses over here. In fact, poor people getting government housing assistance are discouraged from owning a house, but they can rent one with no problem. * +
