So I finally started dark souls and arrived in Lordran. The knight at the bonfire said to go up or down, question is which way do you peeps recommend? Incidentally don't attack the knight, as he is 'almost' unbeatable! Just when I thought I had messed the game up I managed to knock him off the cliff, 1000 souls earned!! * +

Looking at the trophies I presume up is the answer, as the next trophy is for ringing the bell in the undead church? * +

i nailed the knight, you just have to keep countering his attacks. Go down.... * +

I countered him a few times but he kept coming back stronger? I was saved by a backwards roll on his part! * +

i made the mistake of attacking him like you did, thought id messed up my game but just managed to beat him. Go up, you will get murdered if you go anywhere else this early on. * +

I even quit the game but when I reloaded he was still after me!! You said go down first and now go up.... Final answer? Lol * +

You'll see a bridge in the distance just past the well. go there and don't kill NPC's early on they offer great advice. And form mostly part of the story and some sell you spells. * +
