Zambia today is faced with a problem of language, which if not properly handled has the potential to cause great chaos. As a linguist, I see that the main cause of all this is the misconception that most zambians have that language is synonymous to tribe. If we change this misconception and view languages neutrally, we wont face such problems any more. *

The debate was sparked by the Barotse Royal Establisment's ban of a local catholic radio station from playing Bemba and Nyanja songs. I've stayed there and they did it to another local station. What is odd is that Rhumba, South African and American songs are allowed. The name Barotse is actually an adulteration of Bulozi by white colonists. The Tswanas changed Bechuana to Botswana. *

Imagine what nonsense that would be, if all other chiefdoms were to ban other languages in their areas. The Barotse Royal Establishment should remember that , Zambians are One, despite the language diversity. Lozi, Tonga, Bemba etc. We are one. Viva 'One Zambia, One Nation.' *
